چکیده

The formulation of consistent boundary conditions for the quasi-geostrophic (QG) model with an extended Kalman lter in a data assimilation scheme is discussed. To form a well-posed boundary value problem for the QG model, the stream function must be speciied at all boundaries and the vorticity must be speciied at the innow boundaries. The situation becomes signiicantly more complicated when proper boundary conditions are to be speciied for the error covariance evolution equation. For closed or periodic boundaries no severe problems occur, but in general cases with open boundaries, only approximative methods can be used. Here a scheme is presented which allows for the stream function to be updated on the boundaries, e.g., from the use of measurements located close to the boundaries, or from meanders and eddies approaching the boundaries from the interior of the domain. Further, the boundary value problem for the error covariance evolution equation is treated extensively. It is demonstrated that numerical discretization of the error covariance evolution equation leads to severe numerical diiculties when open boundaries are used. An approximate numerical scheme that can be used to handle open boundaries with innow and outtow is proposed, and examples are given to illustrate the method. Is is shown that the boundary scheme is consistent and can be used even with data located at innow boundaries. However, the approximations used in the scheme may lead to loss of positive deeniteness for the error covariance matrix and an algorithm must be used to ensure positive deeniteness for long time integrations.

A New Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter for a Class of Nonlinear Systems

This paper proposes a new adaptive extended Kalman filter (AEKF) for a class of nonlinear systems perturbed by noise which is not necessarily additive. The proposed filter is adaptive against the uncertainty in the process and measurement noise covariances. This is accomplished by deriving two recursive updating rules for the noise covariances, these rules are easy to implement and reduce the n...

Time Delay and Data Dropout Compensation in Networked Control Systems Using Extended Kalman Filter

In networked control systems, time delay and data dropout can degrade the performance of the control system and even destabilize the system. In the present paper, the Extended Kalman filter is employed to compensate the effects of time delay and data dropout in feedforward and feedback paths of networked control systems. In the proposed method, the extended Kalman filter is used as an observer ...

Using the Extended Kalman Filter with a

The formulation of the extended Kalman lter for a multilayer nonlinear quasi-geostrophic ocean circulation model is discussed. The nonlinearity in the ocean model leads to an approxima-tive equation for error covariance propagation, where the transition matrix is dependent on the state trajectory. This nonlinearity complicates the dynamics of the error covariance propagation, and eeects which a...

Enhanced Predictions of Tides and Surges through Data Assimilation (TECHNICAL NOTE)

The regional waters in Singapore Strait are characterized by complex hydrodynamic phenomena as a result of the combined effect of three large water bodies viz. the South China Sea, the Andaman Sea, and the Java Sea. This leads to anomalies in water levels and generates residual currents. Numerical hydrodynamic models are generally used for predicting water levels in the ocean and seas. But thei...
